Late summer is when the repair-or-replace question gets forced. The system limped through another Memphis August, the repair bill is sitting on the counter, and you’re wondering whether you just bought another year — or just threw good money after bad. Meanwhile, fall is coming, which happens to be the best possible season to replace an air conditioner. So it’s worth thinking this through now, clearly, before the next breakdown makes the decision for you.
The Basic Math
The industry rule of thumb is simple enough to do on a napkin: multiply the repair cost by the system’s age in years. If the result exceeds the price of a new system, replacement wins. A $400 repair on an 8-year-old unit passes easily. A $1,500 repair on an 18-year-old unit does not.
The rule works because it captures the real question, which isn’t “can this be fixed?” — almost anything can be fixed — but “how much more am I likely to spend keeping this machine alive, and what am I getting for it?”
When Replacement Is the Obvious Call
Some situations shortcut the math entirely:
- Any significant refrigerant repair on an R-22 system. If your AC was installed before roughly 2010, it likely runs R-22, which is no longer produced. Recharging a leaking R-22 system is pouring expensive, discontinued refrigerant into a hole.
- Compressor failure on a system past 12 to 15 years. The compressor is the heart of the machine, and replacing it in an old system pairs a new engine with worn-out everything else.
- A cracked heat exchanger, if your AC shares an air handler with an aging furnace — that’s a safety issue that changes the whole conversation.
- Repeat failures. Two or three service calls in two seasons is a trend line, not bad luck.
What You Get With Replacement (Besides Cold Air)
Efficiency standards have moved a long way. Systems from the early 2000s commonly ran SEER ratings of 10 to 12; today’s minimum for our region is SEER2 14.3, and mid-tier equipment runs well above it. On a Memphis cooling season — which is long — that gap shows up on every monthly bill for the life of the system.
Newer equipment also handles Memphis humidity better. Two-stage and variable-speed systems run longer, gentler cycles that pull far more moisture from the air, which is precisely what older single-stage units struggle with here. Many homeowners report the humidity improvement before they ever mention the utility savings.
And a replacement done right isn’t just a box swap. Proper sizing via load calculation, duct inspection and sealing, and a correctly matched indoor coil are what make the new system deliver its rated performance. That work is also what a rushed emergency install tends to skip.
Why “Before Fall” Is the Smart Window
Replacing in early fall carries real, practical advantages. The summer pressure is off, so scheduling is flexible and installs happen on your timeline rather than a triage board. You have time to compare equipment tiers and make an unhurried decision. Duct problems can be addressed properly as part of the project. And the new system gets a gentle break-in season instead of being slammed into 100-degree duty on day one — with a full winter and spring before it faces its first real Memphis summer.
Wait until next June instead, and you’ll be making the same decision with the house at 85 degrees, during the busiest weeks of the HVAC year.
An Honest Assessment Beats a Sales Pitch
Not every aging system needs replacement this year. Plenty of 12-year-old units have another few good summers in them, and if repair is the right answer, that’s the answer you should hear. What you want is a straight evaluation: the system’s condition, its repair history, its refrigerant situation, and a clear-eyed read on whether the next dollar is better spent maintaining it or retiring it.
That’s how Benny James has approached it since 1984 — and when replacement is the call, new installations are backed by our 10 Year Full Coverage “Peace of Mind” Warranty, which takes most of the risk out of the decision.
